The Benefits of Facial Gua Sha

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a 700+ year old practice based in traditional Chinese medicine, used as family folk medicine as well as in clinical practice. Facial gua sha is a combination of traditional gua sha based in Chinese Medicine, connective tissue manipulation and lymphatic drainage massage.

Through regular treatment, gua sha gives you a significantly more radiant, lifted and clear appearance. Smooth gem stone tools are stroked across the skin, working the deeper tissues to encourage lymphatic flow, increase circulation and tone facial muscles. The unique edges of various gua sha stones work perfectly to lift and sculpt the contours of the face.

Similar to jade rolling, gua sha activates the different meridians in the face, but gua sha works at a much deeper level, releasing muscle tension and improving lymph drainage, resulting in a brighter, clearer complexion. Regular use can improve the absorption of skincare products and prevent signs of ageing such as sagging and dull skin.

What are the benefits?

In Chinese medicine the face is considered to be a micro-system or hologram of the whole body and a reflection of overall health. Facial gua sha is a holistic treatment that effects the whole body, as the impacts are transported via the fascia network. Facial gua sha increases circulation and promotes collagen and elastin production in the skin. With improved blood and lymphatic flow, waste products and toxins can move more freely, which helps to clear breakouts and impurities. Frequent use can also dramatically improve the firmness and elasticity of the skin. Facial gua sha is a highly effective and natural alternative to more invasive treatments such as Botox.

Rather than preventing signs of ageing, the aim of facial gua sha is to help support your system from the inside-out, resulting in genuine radiance and overall wellbeing. Benefits include:

  • Skin renewal and reduced impurities

  • Boosts circulation to help nourish tissues and skin cells

  • Improves lymph fluid circulation, reducing facial puffiness

  • Brightens the eyes

  • Can fade pigmentation

  • Improves collagen and elastin production

  • Fades fine lines, wrinkles and tightens saggy tissue

  • Sculpts the features of the face such as jaw and cheekbones

  • Improves absorption of skincare products

We use facial gua sha in our holistic facials and this massage practice is also a wonderful way to incorporate a mindful beauty ritual at home, to help ground you into your body and release tension in the face.
